I did not understand what we had to do for this tutorial, but figured it out in the end.
In the above, the LED is connected directly (without resistors because I had only 1 resistor) to the arudino. The code for arduino is quite simple; the new function being used is digitalRead.

Anyways, the resistor + switch enabled the Arduino to properly read the signal on whether it was high or low.
Without the resistor (or even a connection on that switch), the LED would randomly blink or lightup.
The arduino website mentioned this if there isn't a clear signal from digitalRead.
